Beachy goodness

Madigan made... a beachy bathroom.

I know very little about color theory or contrast. I just know I like a soft gray-blue in a bathroom with lots of white.

Definitely muuuuccchh better than the 'before' colors. Wouldn't you agree?

These are the only 'before' pics we have of our guest bath.
We took them during our home inspection (say hi to the back of our home inspector's head).
It may have been cute for the child that lived there, but it felt like we were in a cartoon or game of Frogger.

Needless to say, it was one of the first rooms we tackled when we moved in.
It is a tiny bath, so we wanted it to feel light and bright.

The fixes we made to that bath were primarily cosmetic. Fortunately, the amphibious border came down pretty easily.
After lots of primer, a cool blue gray went on the walls. (Autumn Fog, from Valspar) I even painted the ceiling (well, mainly because the ceiling was blue before and I was lazy and did not want to worry about cutting in). Surprisingly, it does not feel smaller at all in there. I actually think it helps the space feel a little bit bigger.
But the border still caused me problems. Even after skim coats and sanding, you could still see a very faint line in the paint where the border hung. I noted that the lines were very level. I added some white paint to the blue for a lighter shade and painted a stripe within the border area.
In the end, I really like the stripe now. I think it finishes the room. Funny how those things work out, right?

With the help of handy family members, we replaced the countertop, faucet, mirror and light fixture. (We upgraded from super basic-basic builder's grade to big-box hardware store/catalog grade.)
The vinyl floor was neutral and in good shape, so we left that alone.

Then came the accessories. I made a little shelf out of some brackets and a piece of pine board. That got a coat of white trim paint. My grandmother's glass containers were perfect for holding shells and pretty essentials. I found four unfinished shadow boxes and painted the frames white. Using some square mattes, I mounted a cute shell a bit off-center in each.

Along with all the beachiness, there is a very subtle 'square' theme.
Square jars, Squares on the rug, squares behind the shell pictures, squares on the votive holders,
squares in the shower curtain, square shower curtain hooks.
You can't see it, but the hand towels are white with gray-blue embroidered squares, too.

There is no window in this bath, so the pictures are a bit dim.

But I think anyone can see it was a pretty dramatic before and after.

No more cartoons, just beachy goodness.
