Madigan made... a gardening resolution.
It's official.
I'm giving up.
I give up trying to grow tomatoes.
I tried to grow them over the past four years. I did.
The first year, I put a tomato plant in a pot on the deck. (Note: We are not allowed to plant veggie gardens in our development. They have to be in pots.) Little Madigan was just a puppy at the time. One day, in a flurry of puppy excitement, she knocked the pot over. It was an ugly scene: plant parts and soil strewn everywhere.
The second year I moved the pot to a corner of the deck that lil Madigan infrequently visited. It avoided destruction, but I don't think the pot had enough sunlight. Only one or two little tomatoes showed up.
Year three I moved the pot into more sun, but I found it hard to keep watered. Pots dry out quickly. (We went away on vacation and forgot to ask someone to water. That did not help, either.) Again, just a couple of little red gems developed.
This year, I thought I'd try the upside down planter method. Maybe this would help the moisture problem?
I made my own planter out of an old plastic hanging basket. I hung it from a hook next to my basil in a sunny corner of the deck.
This would work. I knew it. I was so excited about the promise of tomatoes. I watered it frequently.
Here it is in June:
It eventually got too heavy for the hook. So I moved it to the edge of the deck:
So far - this is my only ripe tomato. It's almost September! And there are only a couple other tomatoes that showed up on the vine.
Fortunately, I enjoyed other great tomatoes this summer. (I love tomato sandwiches.)
Just not my own. (sad face)
Next spring, I know I'm going to get excited again about gardening.
I'll have a shiny new strategy to grow a better tomato.
Talk me out of it. Please.
