Madigan made... sports themed subway art.
I mentioned during my brooch art and botanical collection posts that I am not a big fan of store bought wall art. I really enjoy customizing my own 'art' for a space.
So when I saw all the awesome subway art that was popping up on other blogs, the gears started to turn in my head.
Pottery Barn had a fabulous version a few years ago:

If you want some wonderful DIY subway art inspiration, you really must check out Jen's Subway Art Showcase over at Tatertots and Jello. There is a variety of great ideas there.
Mr. Madigan and I are revamping our family room in the basement. He got his new TV, and I bought some new storage for my crafts (more on that later). I am attempting a subtle sports theme in the room. Our goal is to have the room ready for the beginning of football season.
The space seemed to call out for some sports terminology subway art. Mr. Madigan plays and/or watches a great deal of golf, baseball and football. So, I looked up a variety of terms related to those games.
I debated how to make my version. Use vinyl lettering? Stencil/paint it?
It seems to be a known fact in our family that I have a hard time writing in a straight line. (look at my chalkboard quotes for an example!) This project involved tons of letters. Yikes! I had concerns that I could evenly lay out and apply vinyl words.
The easiest solution was to create a graphic version on my computer with a couple of different sans-serifed fonts. Sans-serifed fonts seemed to best mirror the Pottery Barn inspiration. (What is the difference between serifed and sans-serifed fonts? Read this answer.)
I made two versions. One with a brick red background and the other with a black background. I saved the files as a jpg and had them printed as a 8"x10" photos at Walmart.
I used some old
Black frame with red background? Or the red frame with black background?
In the end, I went with the reddish frame and black art.
I like it!
I plan to add my subway art version to the Subway Art Party at Tatertots and Jello.
You also will probably find me at these link parties, too!
Update Feb 2011: I also will be adding this to the Typography party with these gals:
