Madigan made... a new quote and a spooky wall.
But this time, I made a few little creepy changes in my kitchen. Did you notice them?
Kinda hard to miss, huh?

I have to say, Halloween is such a fun holiday. There are so many options for decorations!
To those of you that go 'all out' with pillar to post spookiness: more power to you! I admire your passion.
But for me, you all know I prefer simple fall decor.
And with Halloween, I find it difficult to edit sometimes.
I try to keep it simple. I do not always succeed, but I try.
My taste in Halloween decor is more vintage/classic/spooky vs. fun/cute. And I have a hard time decorating with orange. Reds, blacks and whites are easier for me to incorporate into my rooms. They are sinister colors, right? To those of you that go 'all out' with pillar to post spookiness: more power to you! I admire your passion.

So, this past summer Mr. Madigan and I sorted through all our boxes in the basement, including the holiday decor. When I was looking at them, I realized that many of my Halloween decorations were small, cute little items that did not come together in a cohesive way. So, I edited and donated some of my decorations. I kept the ones I loved and the ones I knew would work in our home.
But after cleaning everything out, I realized that I did not have a great deal of Halloween stuff. So, I've been busy making a few things that hopefully will last from season to season. I tried to make multiples of the same item and/or repeat colors. I focused on simple, bold displays with some repetition in color/shape for impact. It started with my black gravestones, then the white pumpkins.
For this section of my kitchen,
I made simple changes for a unified (and hopefully scary?) look.

Some of the stuff pictured I already owned:
- The big chalkboard - It just needed a new creepy quote. - My diy cream ware plates - I moved them around a little and added some Halloween plates.
- My grandmother's milk glass cake stand
- The simple white pumpkins
(I stole a few from my kitchen cart. Don't worry, the cart is not bare. I found the perfect substitute for that display.)
The rest of the items I needed were easy enough to make:
- Black pine cones (I already owned some pine cones, so I just gave them a coat of spray paint.)
- A black 'doily' (I just cut the image out of black card stock using my paper cutting machine.)
These skull plates make me smile! They totally meet my criteria for vintage/classic/spooky decorations. The two with a black background were a gift and I found the other four at Home Goods last month.
Remember how I hung my creamware plates on the wall using picture hanging strips? It was so simple to change out the white plates for new ones. I love this idea for easy holiday decor!
If you follow me on Twitter, I debated this week about which quote to use on the chalkboard. I considered quotes from Edgar Allen Poe, Washington Irving, or the Wicked Witch of the West.
But, I settled on a quote from Shakespeare. I think it is perfect.
(My penmanship? That's another story!)
