Need a handmade Christmas card idea?

Madigan made... a recap of prior holiday cards.

I typically try and make my own greeting cards every year. If you follow me on Twitter, you know that I am currently working on mine for this year.

But I just started blogging this summer, so you missed the older cards! I thought I'd share with you ideas that I used the past couple of years. I still had a few leftover in our card box.

The designs I like are pretty simple and straightforward. That typically reflects us the best. (and I like to keep them easy to make, too!)

For both of these cards, they started out as an 8.5x11" sheet of paper. If you cut the paper in half and fold that in half, you have a card that will easily fit in an 'invitation size' envelope from Staples or Office Max.

I printed the text (and some images) on the front and back of the paper. I just mocked them up on my computer on the full sized sheet. It took a little trial and error to figure out where to place the words so that when I copy and cut them, the card would open/fold correctly.

Once I had them looking good, I took the draft to a copy center and ran the design off onto 8.5x11" card stock. Then, I brought them home and cut and folded the cards (you could pay the copy center to do this for you for a small fee, too).

This red one is still my favorite. After I printed off the image, I added a panel of red paper. I just used a decorative stitch on my sewing machine along one edge of the panel for a little interest. I taped the hanging threads to the back and used adhesive to hold the entire panel onto the card.

The white one was even easier. I found the snowflake images in Word and added the text.
Once I printed them off and cut them, I lightly colored the snowflakes with a pastel marker. Then, I added tiny drops of glue and a little glitter for sparkle.

Finally, I made coordinating envelopes with a cute stamp. I think this finishes off a card.

Later this week, I will show you this year's card. The design is simple, but I got a little fancy by using my die-cutting machine. They are looking pretty cute! Can't wait to show you! (but I have to get them in the mail, first!)
