Make a Fun Halloween Wreath {orange, lime, black and white!}

Madigan made… a colorful fall wreath from paper, wood, fabric and decoupage.

If you read this blog, you know I’m all about simple and elegant holiday décor.
But sometimes, especially on Halloween, you need to have a little fun with the decorations!

I love this crazy and colorful wreath.
Compared to the simple medallion wreath I showed you earlier this week, this one has a bit more going on and took a little more time to create.

But it was very easy to put together!

I think it’s pretty cute! Let me show you how to make one.

Supplies used:
  • Wooden wreath form
  • Craft paper in several different patterns/colors
  • Decoupage
  • Craft paint
  • Raffia
  • Hot glue
  • Ribbon to hang (or optional… go here to see how to make the rag sash)

First, I painted the exposed edges of the wood circle with black craft paint.

Then I cut up strips of paper. Except for the spider web print... None of the sheets were actually "Halloween" prints. I just picked out leftover scrap paper that contained white, black, orange or a combo of those colors.
.

I cut the strips just long enough to cover the width of the wreath (sometimes trimming with scissors to fit the curve of the wreath). Then, I brushed a layer of decoupage on the wood and smoothed a strip of paper down. I brushed more decoupage onto both the wood and paper edge and overlapped another paper strip on top.

I worked my way all the way around the wreath layering strips of paper. I tried to keep a semi-pattern to what I was doing... But not really! the widths of the strips were not 100% even either. I kind of like the random look to the result.

Once all of the pieces of paper were down, I put two coats of decoupage on top of the paper strips to seal and secure them.

After I finished gluing down the paper, I felt the wreath needed something else. So, I grabbed some lime green raffia (recognize it from my Easter egg wreath?) and wrapped that around it. I secured the ends of the raffia down with hot glue in the back.

To hang the wreath... I was stumped! A plain ribbon would work, but i wanted to add a little more. After looking at it for a bit, I realized that the colors and patterns in the wreath were very similar to the festive rag dog collar/costume I made last year! Bingo!

The dog wore that no-costume for only a few hours last October. So, I figured I could borrow it.
I cut it open and tied it around the wreath! It worked perfectly!

In a strange way, this wreath is still simple. The shape is very simple. It is just a decorated round circle with a fun sash to hang it. But the mix of color, pattern, layers and texture on that circle is what makes it stand out.

It is different compared to the other simple wreath I just showed you this week.

I think these two wreaths are a study in contrast. The colors for both of them are similar. But that is where the similarities slow down.

One wreath shows that less is more...

And the other...                  Clearly says that more is... more!

I love them both. But the simple gal in me still loves the ceiling medallion wreath.

What about you? Is there one wreath you like better?
