Craft photos: there is ALWAYS a before and after

Madigan made… a few photo outtakes.

After last week’s post of some of my recent craft fails, I thought I’d continue with the confessional theme and show you a little more of the ‘woman behind this blog curtain’.  i.e. Photo outtakes. We all love ‘em, right?

First, let me give you a little background about why I’m showing you this today.

Diane from In My Own Style lives near me and we get together once in awhile. After my Scarf Week posts, she told me that I looked “so pretty” in those pictures.  And I replied, “Diane… you do realize that you only saw my chin in all of those photos, right?”

But it got me thinking… so much of what I show on the blog is edited down for you with care. You should know that the final craft photos I share take work to look nice… they take planning to set up and stage. And, of course, some photo editing and cropping.

When I take pictures wearing scarves and necklaces, I do my best to focus on the craft only… not my face. Plus, I have a little confession:

I rarely wear much make-up in those photos and my hair is usually a hot mess.

I know that most of my face and hair will not end up in the final photo. Plus, I figure that you want to see the craft, not me, right? So, I typically just use a little foundation and lip gloss when I take photos.

But… maybe y’all DO want to see the before ‘me’ in these photos? I thought it might be fun to share some of the before and unedited photos with ‘me’ still in them.  Plus, I sometimes make weird faces and look in odd directions when I take photos of myself.

Wanna see?  Enjoy…

Lots of lip gloss and cutting out most of my limp hair helped the cute scarf be the focus.  { My sweater to cowl scarf refashion }

The angle of the camera made my face look big in this photo and it was a little distracting. Trimming the shot back helped the eye focus on the necklace instead.  { my gold seashell necklace }

Cropping and highlighting the scarf in this photo let my craft be the star… not me, pretending to smile at something random on the wall in my bedroom.  { my reversible cowl scarf }

Here is an example of what a little photo editing can do to a dull photo and poor light.  I <3 Photoscape and Picasa for photo editing.  { glass gem bib necklace }

Here’s another before and after cropped photo to focus just on the DIY cowl scarf.

Don’t I look super duper excited in these photos? Um, yeah. Taking photos of yourself is a strange feeling and it’s hard to get that ‘happy’ expression to translate in your eyes. That is why I usually crop my photos down a little and just show you my chin. {my tie dyed necklace}

Do you find it hard to take photos of yourself without making peculiar faces? Ok, good. I’m so glad I’m not the only one! :)

And…. goodness… one of my blog goals this year is to do a few video tutorials (vlogs, for those of you in-the-know). How the heck am I going to accomplish that challenge without feeling silly in front of a camera? Anyone have any advice?
